TAX

Taxes and Kids: How Can the Dutch Government Support You ?

You are currently living in a country where the government feels it to be its duty to give financial assistance to residents who are raising children. Some political parties are more committed to this issue than others, as you will understand. Most likely, this is not any different from other countries in the world. Where can you find this financial assistance in the tax law? And; are there any other recourses?

CAREER

Career and Family: Surviving the Juggling Act

Until recently most women here simply left the workforce when they had children. New changes in tax legislation, however, have made having a second family income a more attractive proposition. This has been paired with increasing financial pressure on young families (caused in part by the high cost of housing) and the desire by a growing number of women to continue their careers after motherhood. And working mothers are quickly discovering what I did: juggling a career, marriage, motherhood, housework, chauffeur duty, networking, lifelong learning, fitness (and dog obedience training) takes planning, flexibility and support.

HEALTH

The Consultatiebureau

In our lightening-fast paced, information-based society, we are bombarded daily with information through the Internet, T.V., radio and press. As a result, much of our time is spent filtering out or through information rather than actually absorbing it! And more often than not, all we really want or need is somebody to talk to – a klankbord – an opportunity to share or exchange ideas and beliefs. For an expatriate, hundreds, if not thousands of miles away from “home”, that need to connect is magnified during certain rites of passage such as getting married, buying a new home or taking that important step and deciding to have a baby. Previous issues of The XPat Journal have covered topics regarding pregnancy and delivery in the Netherlands. But what happens once the baby is there? Read this article for more information on the consultatiebureau, or Well-Baby Clinic.
