INTERVIEW

Jacob Gelt Dekker - Making Something out of Nothing

Jacob Gelt Dekker is a famous Dutchman, especially outside Holland, who went from businessman to real-life anthropologist. Probably one of the younger ‘retired’ millionaires of the Netherlands, he now invests his wealth into social projects. What’s more, he needs project managers and hopes to find them via a TV show that will be airing soon. Meet a Dutchman who is multitalented and unorthodox.
“To me, being an entrepreneur means making something out of nothing. It is this creativity that I like about it. You just go for it, without being afraid to take risks and learn from your mistakes. No, there is no such thing as a setback. A setback is merely another word for your own miscalculation. All you have to do is come up with a better plan.”

LEGAL AFFAIRS

Termination of an Employment Agreement in the Netherlands

In two articles, the second one of which will be published in the next issue of The XPat Journal, the author addresses the different ways of terminating an employment agreement in the Netherlands.
Both an employment agreement for a fixed period of time and an employment agreement for an indefinite period of time are terminated in the following ways: by mutual consent, during the trial period, for ‘urgent cause’ or by the court, for serious cause.
The first two are discussed here, the next two as well as the ‘cantonal court formula’ can be found in the next issue.

LEISURE

Frisian Heights
I’m sure you and the people around you all have a mental list of ‘places to go before you turn fifty’ or ‘things to do before you die’; I know I do. Flying in a hot air balloon has undeniably been on my list for a long time. Maybe the next thing you should consider is compiling a list of ‘things to do while still in Holland’. You could include all kinds of things such as Frisian horizontal pole-vaulting, mud walking, eating an entire raw herring in one bite and – a day of sailing and flying over Friesland.
Friesland is one of the most northern provinces of the Netherlands, and is, in my eyes, one of the most beautiful and authentic ones, made up of lots of water and all things flat. Given this, it is ideal for sailing and idyllic for flying. In fact you can even combine the two into one day which would look a little something like this...
