The Glass Ceiling in the Netherlands - Looking for Solutions
The first part of this article (in the Spring 2001 issue of The XPat Journal) about the situation for women in management, both in the Netherlands and internationally, concluded that the present picture is rather bleak. Perhaps more so in the Netherlands because there is a culture of denial concerning the problem of inclusion of women in management. In a recent informal survey conducted by international management consulting firm global tmc of male Dutch middle-managers, 85% felt there was no glass ceiling in the Netherlands “because we are so tolerant here”.

Once the Baby has Arrived - The Postpartum Time-table
This completes Lee Tolman’s postpartum ‘to do’ list. Having and bringing up children anywhere is a challenge, but even more so for those of us expatriates far from the security and warmth of close family and friends. Resources and help are out there, you sometimes just need a little help finding your way. In this article, you can read about health, legal and employee issues around having your baby in the Netherlands.

LEISURE
Zeeland - The Land of Contradictions
The play of water and wind – which sometimes has disastrous effects – is typical of the province of Zeeland. Here, everyday life focuses on the sea. For many centuries, the sea brought good fortune and prosperity – and grief and adversity. The contradiction ‘zee’ - ‘land’ (sea-land) is reflected in every sense. The old villages bear witness to the glorious past of living with the sea. The other side of the picture is the ‘Delta projects’, Zeeland’s defence against that same sea, designed and built using the latest technological advances. There you find the inseparable tie with the sea, through oyster and mussel farming and the fishing industry, and, not to be overlooked, the wide variety of recreational options for aquatic sports fans.
