LEGAL AFFAIRS

Self-Employed or Employee?

What do interim managers, free-lance journalists, franchisees, IT consultants and tax advisors in the Netherlands have in common? They could either be working on the basis of an employment contract or on the basis of a contract of assignment. The difference in qualification has great consequences, for instance in the area of dismissal protection, the payment of contributions and the payment of taxes.

LEISURE

De Hoge Veluwe National Park
My five-year old nephew was dubious. “Are you sure I can climb on it?” he asked for the second time. Even at his tender age he’d learned that art is generally there to be looked at but never touched, let alone trampled over. I grabbed his hand and we clambered up. Being able to ‘interact’ with the outdoor exhibits in the Kröller-Muller’s sculpture garden is just one of the highlights of a trip to the Hoge Veluwe National Park, Holland’s largest nature reserve.

EXPATRIATE MANAGEMENT

International Human Resources Management

A survey that Deloitte & Touche held last year under some 80 Europe-based and some 75 USA-based companies, showed that, when selecting a candidate for an international assignment, 52% usually only had the ‘choice’ of one candidate. A considerable 66% of the companies never used an assessment tool to make their choice. And only 41% of the companies frequently involved their HR department in the selection. Can they be sure that the best candidate will be chosen for the assignment? There is a fair chance that this will not be the case.
